2009 Calgary Folk Fest
The Calgary Folk Festival saw beautiful, sunny weather this summer and ARF was there to be a part of it. 2009 was the first time ARF attended the Folk Fest in an effort to be present at new events and venues. A booth was set up on Saturday and Sunday where volunteers educated the public, collected donations and held a raffle which totaled $350 (donations and raffle combined). The proceeds from the weekend will support the Pad for Paws Initiative.
Thank you to Event Volunteers Lisa Wintrip, Kim Ward and Ashley Francis as well as Logistics Team Members Lori-Ann Sibbald, Julie Bousfield, Bridget Ady, Kim Anderson, Julie Felber, Ann-Marie Patkus-Cook and RJ Bailot for your efforts.
Calgary Co-op Bags to Riches
Each year, Calgary Co-op employees choose four charities to receive funds donated by members and customers to their Bags to Riches program. If you re-use your plastic, paper or canvas tote bag you will receive a 3 cent credit per bag which you can donate to the designated charities. Both charities and the environment win with Bags to Riches. Once again, ARF was chosen as the recipient of the January through March proceeds and was recently presented with a cheque for $6,926.49. Thank you, Co-op!
ARF Joins 2009 Stampede Parade
On July 3rd, the Animal Rescue Foundation walked alongside marching bands, horses, floats and many, many more in the 2009 Stampede Parade. While ARF has been in the parade before, this year was different because it was the first time ARF entered a float.
The process took 4 months to complete. The initial job for the ARF Stampede Committee- consisting of Bridget Ady, Judy McDonald, Julie Bousfield and Eric Black- was to design the float on paper and submit the application. Once approved, many volunteers spent hours bringing the drawings to fruition. Judy and Eddy Zaychkowsky, who generously allowed the float to be stored and constructed on their acreage near Airdrie, assisted greatly in the construction process and provided transportation of the float to and from downtown.
On Thursday night volunteers and family members were invited to a Stampede Barbeque where they parked and prepped the float for the following morning. Despite rain and thunder storms during the night, the rain ponchos were not needed the day of the parade. It was a cold morning but after a few hours turned into the perfect temperature. Volunteers met at the float for judging and then went off to breakfast provided by the Stampede where they met Breakfast Television for an interview.
Jenn Zaychokowshy and Rachelle Reed helped drive the ATV pulling Arfy (the ARF dog mascot) and Hector (the ARF cat mascot). Bridget Ady and Judy McDonald displayed a large ARF banner at the front of the float while Julie Bousfield, Eric Black, Lori-Ann Sibbald, Lindsay Kozuska, Lisa Marie Langevin, Peggy McConnell and Corrine Coverdale walked dogs. Sarah McDonald, Ashley Francis, Tara Dwyer and Ross Dance held placards displaying dogs and cats that have been adopted. The dogs Sam, Max, Vada, Murphy, Oakley, Saxon, Autumn and Rocky were a huge hit among young parade onlookers. When ARF marched past many spectators cheered.
The parade was an awesome opportunity to raise awareness for the Animal Rescue Foundation. Many people helped bring this event to life other than those listed here, thank you for making our first ARF Stampede Parade Float a success!
Blood Tribe Pet Wellness Clinic a Success
Thanks so much for helping us out with our June Blood Tribe Pet Wellness Clinic. A total of 104 dogs or cats were sterilized, 52 dogs were vaccinated and treated for parasites and 66 dogs or cats were rescued through the kind assistance of the many animal welfare groups who helped us out. We couldn’t have done it without the 46 volunteers who worked so hard in the snowy weather.
The funding for the clinic was provided by: Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), Blood Tribe Chief and Council, Heather Waddell and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).
Thank you to Bayer Animal Health and Wyeth Animal Health for the donations of medical supplies. We’re grateful to the Calgary Humane Society for lending us surgical equipment, a van, and donating pet food. Once again, Melissa Bailot provided amazing food and Sherri MacDonald sent her home baking. Thanks to Josey Kitson from WSPA for coming all the way from Toronto to volunteer at the clinic. Special thanks to Dr. Cheema who performed one last surgery to amputate the injured tail of R.J., the cat.
The following animal welfare groups all helped in so many ways to make this clinic a success:
| Alberta Animal Rescue Crew (AARC) | Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) |
| Calgary Humane Society | Cardston Animal Control |
| Cochrane and Area Humane Society | Home Safe Animal Rescue |
| Misty Creek Dog Rescue | No Kill Alliance (NOKA) |
| Paws and Claws Rescue | Pawsitive Match Rescue |
| Pound Rescue | Prairie Dogs Canine Rescue |
Calgary Farmers’ Market
During the weekend of June 12-14, 2009, ARF made an appearance at the Calgary Farmers’ Market. Although no animals are permitted at the Currie Barracks, a number of volunteers showed up to help educate people about ARF, promote volunteerism, sell merchandise and collect donations. Approximately $900 in sales and donations were brought in.
Two binders, one for cats and one for dogs, showed off the many cuddly creatures that were unable to attend the event. Thank you to Lori-Ann Sibbald, Rachael Soloman, Denise Oyelese, Nicole Dawkins, Lisa Wintrip, Kate Lynch, Nancy Langlois, Melissa Alderson, Shelley Decker, Julie Bousfield, Brooke Hunter and Stef McDonald for helping to spread the word!
Canada Safeway - Saddle Ridge
For the first quarter of this year, Safeway had elected to allow each store to select a charity to receive the funds that accumulate in their cash register charity boxes. The fundraising team at Canada Safeway Saddle Ridge selected ARF as the most worthy recipient of these funds. All money collected from the register boxes up until March 31 was donated to ARF and raised $1,159.44!
